Hey Ewa,

You're wondering how waterproof the Stoic MountainWool NalluSt. Pro Mitt really is — and whether they can handle an hour of cycling in the rain. Let's get to the bottom of that, based on official information.

How waterproof are they according to official data?
The glove uses a DWR (Bionic Finish Eco) treatment on the outer material and is described by suppliers as ‘waterproof.’

What does that mean?

These are water-repellent, highly water-resistant winter gloves (high degree of waterproofing), not fully waterproof hardshell mitten systems such as Gore-Tex or PU laminates.
The DWR coating keeps out rain and wet snow just fine as long as it doesn't get intensely wet for long periods of time.
Leather inserts (palm pieces) are very robust, but in prolonged wet weather, leather will eventually become saturated.

Can they withstand one hour of rain on a bicycle?

Short, honest answer:
Yes, probably — but with some caveats.

Why yes?

- The DWR + dense polyamide layer keeps out rain for a considerable amount of time.
- The wool Lavalan lining continues to provide warmth, even with slight moisture absorption.
- Windproofing keeps your hands warm at cycling speeds.

Why might they not be completely waterproof?

- Constant rain + wind pressure on a bicycle is more intense than walking in wet snow.
- DWR is not a membrane — at some point, the outer layer becomes saturated (‘wet-out’).
- Leather eventually becomes damp under prolonged rain, even if it takes a while.

So in practice:
- Light to moderate rain, one hour of cycling → usually no problem.
- Heavy rain, continuous splashing water, high speed → risk of slowly getting wet.

You could consider the Stoic KalmarSt. Overmitts 3L - https://www.bergfreunde.nl/stoic-kalmarst-overmitts-3l-handschoenen/?searchparam=Stoic%20-%20KalmarSt.%20Overmitts%203L%20-%20Handschoenen as an extra layer.

These mittens are:

- a full 3-layer hardshell overglove,
- designed to make your existing mittens completely waterproof,
- ideal in constantly wet, windy or freezing weather (such as cycling in the rain).

This makes them the perfect ‘raincoat for your gloves’.

Advantages of combining

- You get the best of both worlds:

→ Warmth & insulation from the NalluSt. Pro Mitt
→ 100% waterproofness & windproofness from the Overmitt

- Extremely robust in prolonged rain.
- Extends the life and performance of your gloves.

Possible disadvantage

- You lose some direct grip and feel, because Overmitts are always a bit bulkier.
- In dry conditions, it's overkill — but ideal for cycling in the rain.

My nuanced opinion:

- For cycling in heavy or prolonged rain, this is the best, most robust and technically correct solution.
- For light rain, it's optional, but nice to have for total certainty.

Best regards,

Remy
