The Ohm is a device by Edelrid that on the one hand allows for much heavier people to abseil. On the other hand, it is hanged into the first express sling with the inserted rope which lets it serve as a ballast resistor the roped party can then abseil as normal. An Ohm neither increases friction during normal rope release while abseiling nor does it negatively affect the rope feed. The break function is only activated if you fall, and therefore helps to dynamically slow down a person that weighs up to double the usual amount and securely break their fall.
For this, the ohm increases the friction in the chain of safety and was, above all conceived for use in climbing halls as well as sports climbing on rocks. In this way, the device by Edelrid serves as a brake booster of sorts, so people of different weights can climb together without being afraid that they will not be supported in case of a slip up, or that they will be pulled onto, or rather into the wall!
