As the calendar rolls into late November, we usually start getting tired of playing rock/paper/arm warmers, where dressing for a ride has become a game to match the layers to the conditions and hope for the best outcome. At about this time, we tend to stuff everything back into the drawer and go for the simple solution: Pearl Izumi‘s Elite Softshell Jacket. It blocks the elements, insulates, and breathes well to evacuate interior moisture, taking the guesswork out of dressing for cold-weather rides.
The Elite Softshell Jacket is a three-layer fabric that combines Pearl‘s Softshell and Thermal fabrics. Thermal insulates and wicks moisture, the first building blocks for comfort during cold-weather rides, and Softshell takes the final two steps, adding a wind and water-resistant layer to the thermal party. Both fabrics provide an accommodating stretch, so your cold-weather armor doesn‘t actually feel like armor. The Softshell layer doesn‘t compromise breathability, either, so water vapor will move freely from the inside out, even while the outside water is denied entry.
The jacket has a semi-form fit, which means that the upper-torso and upper-sleeves sit close and rely on anatomic paneling and the material‘s stretch to move intuitively with your body while riding. Toward the bottom of the torso and sleeves, the fit relaxes, giving you some extra room for a comfortable range of motion. There are two pockets, one at the chest and one at the small of the back, and both are zippered. They‘ll go a long way to ensuring that the contents of your pockets are there for your whole ride. The full-length zipper has an internal draft flap. Reflective accents placed throughout help keep you visible in low-light conditions.
The Pearl Izumi Elite Softshell Jacket is available in five sizes ranging from Small to XX-Large and in the colors Black, Mykonos Blue/black, Screaming Yellow/black, and True Red/black.
